In 3 private lessons you get a complete postural analysis, health history review, core and peripheral muscle stregth test, check for diastasis recti (following pregnancy), review of pilates mat fundamentals, and an introductory workout on the pilates equipment. From this, I assess your strength and develop a customized workout program for you, to be done either here, in a private or group setting, or at home.
Other studios may start you out quicker, but you may just get a "cookie cutter" routine. I take time to get to know you, and find out what's most appropriate for your needs. More than anything, I hope to teach you about how to move your body, what you are doing correctly, and what you need to be doing differently. I base this on sound principles of anatomy, and 30+ years of experience in the dance world. I know money's tight right now, so if you are going to spend it, shouldn't you spend it on the best possible workout you can get for you, and not just another cookie? Studio Policies:
| Class DescriptionsGentle Vinyassa Flow
This class incorporates all that you love about a Vinyassa class, with some added meditation and breathing exercises. Find your mental center while building your core and expanding your flexabiity. Excellent for balance and stability. Good for beginners or those new to yoga. Open Level Pilates Mat Class For students who are familiar with Pilates, this class covers the basic foundations and warm-ups, then takes you through an intense workout that focuses on correct alignment while strengthening your core. Can use small props to increase difficulty. Level III Pilates Mat: For students familiar with Pilates exercises, this class is a non-stop workout that will challenge your core from the very beginning. Fast paced to get you warmed up, you will leave feeling like you've worked. A strong focus on form and alignment makes this class even more difficult. Introduction to Pilates Mat This class is for the absolute pilates beginner. We review core anatomy, function, planes of movement, correct breathing, and slowly work out way through the basic exercises. Best done in a workshop series - look for this class to be offered as a special small group class. Level I - Reformer: For students who are new to the pilates reformer, this class combines basic mat-work with basic reformer work so you begin to learn the choreography of the reformer. Care is taken to make sure you are keeping the correct form, and the class progresses based on the level and ability of the participants. Level II - Reformer: For students who are familiar with the reformer and have done both mat and reformer work before. This class begins to challenge you in more complex full-body movements that require greater focus, concentration, and strength. Prerequisite: Level I reformer and mat Level III -Reformer Now we start to challenge your coordination, the control of your deep abdominal muscles, and your strength, while still focusing on the concentration, breathing and flow of the movements. More exercises are done in a kneeling position, and we begin to do some standing ones. Prerequisite: Level II Reformer and Mat Level IV - Reformer In this level we pick up the pace, do fewer reps but more exercises, and begin to make the workout a full and comprehensive class from start to finish. We will incorporate some inversions and standing balance work. Prerequisite - Level III reformer and mat Adult Absolute Beginner Ballet: Have you ever wanted to learn ballet but thought you were too old? If so, this is the perfect class for you. You will start with learning all the basic positions of the arms, feet and body, and then move through the beginning level steps, both at the barre and also doing some center work. No experience necessary, open to all ages (over 18). 10 week sessions occur throughout the year. Adult Intermediate Ballet: This intermediate level ballet class is taught by studio owner Marilyn Miller, and is best described as a ballet class for former dancers over 40, taught by a dancer over 40. Her training styles include SAB, RAD, Chechetti, Bournonville, and Vaganova. Most notably influenced by San Francisco Choreographer and contemporary ballet teacher Alonzo King, she also draws from the modern influences of Limon and Graham. Hour and a half class consists of barre and floor work. Ballet shoes or sticky socks required. Previous ballet experience necessary, but you don't need to have done it in a long time! Specialty Classes: Pilates Mat for Back Care This special class is offered to those who suffer from chronic low-back pain. Taught by studio owner Marilyn Miller, you will learn how weak abdominals contribute to your pain, what muscles are weak and which are strong, and what you need to do to correct this imbalance so you can live without chronic pain. check schedule for times/days |
