Marilyn Miller - Pilates on Hudson Owner
Stott Pilates (tm) Certified Instructor, A.C.E. Personal Trainer

Picture
Marilyn was first introduced to pilates at the University of Utah's prestigious ballet training program, and continued with it as her dance career took her from Ballet West in Salt Lake City to Eugene Ballet in Oregon and finally San Francisco, where she was a soloist dancer with the San Francisco Opera.  "Pilates always got me back onstage, dancing better than before I got injured", says Marilyn, who was fortunate to have access to the Center for Dance Medicine at St. Francis Hospital. There she did pilates as part of the orthopedic-postrehabilitation aspect of her physical therapy.  She was priviledged to have had some great instructors, including  Elizabeth Larkham, now the head of Balanced Body's Pilates Education Department, Director of Pilates and Beyond at the San Francisco Bay Club, a senior consultant to Pilates Style Magazine and Pilates Pro.com.

Marilyn's personal experience doing pilates in a post-rehabilitation setting sold  her on the benefits of pilates, particularly in muscular re-strengthening and realignment.  She chose to certify through Stott Pilates as it takes a biomechanical approach to teaching the classical exercises of Joseph Pilates.  "It's not that I don't believe everyone can benefit from the traditional exercises - I know they can.  But with our sedentary society, there are a lot of people who simply don't have the strength or understanding of physical exercise to do them immediately.  That's why I try to find someone's 'Zero Point', the level that is best for them to start at, and that may or may not be a traditional pilates exercise."

Shortly after she moved to New York her dance career came to an end, thanks to numerous long-standing injuries.  Not giving up her love of fitness, she  first became certified with the American Council on Exercise as a Personal Trainer in November 2000, and completed her full Stott Pilates Comprehensive Certification in 2003.  After training at numerous clubs and studios in Westchester and New York, including Club Fit JV and Briarcliff, Bedford Pilates, and the New York Health and Raquet Club, she opened her own studio in 2003.

Marilyn is a Master Trainer and specializes in working with clients who require detailed attention to specific orthopedic problems.  She is available throughout the week for private or partner lessons and consultations.

Marilyn teaches Advanced Core Conditioning Tuesday mornings at 10:00, and Open Level Pilates Tuesdays at 6:30 pm.  She also trains private clients by appointment throughout the week.

Carter Celente, Simonson Technique

Picture
Carter Celente began studying the Simonson Technique at Barnard College/Columbia University in 1994 and continued her training under Lynn Simonson and Katiti King at Dance Space Center/Dance New Amsterdam. She has performed her own work as well as choreography by Katiti King.

Simonson Technique, created and developed by master teacher Lynn Simonson, is an organic approach to movement that prepares the body to dance in a way that is anatomically intelligent and somatically aware. The goals of Simonson Technique training are to eliminate the pre-disposition to injury from previous mis-alignment patterns, develop and support the body in a way that allows efficient and free movement and to experience the joy of dance with longevity and wellness. A teacher of Simonson Technique recognizes that each student is unique. Rather than ask students to fit a pre-described ideal, they are guided and taught as to what is anatomically correct for their bodies. Hailed as an intelligent and logical method to prepare the body for dance, the Simonson Technique has received recognition throughout the world since 1970 and is taught by certified faculty in 20 countries worldwide.

Carter teaches Simonson technique Thursday evenings at 7:30

Deborah believes that Mind-Body fitness and Wellness that begins with the breath is the most natural way to get in touch with how you feel in your body, how it moves most easily and efficiently and how to transfer what you learn in your practice to everyday life.  Placing the breath at the center focuses and calms the mind while it energizes and relaxes the body.

An avid outdoor sports enthusiast, Deborah first became a licensed massage therapist in 1990, studying accupressure, neuromuscular therapy and shiatsu.  Continuing her studies in Mind-Body modalities, she completed her B.S. in Theraputic Recreation at Virginia Commonwealth University, working with people suffering from acute brain injuries and strokes.  Pursuing her passion for plants, she also holds a certification in Aromatherapy, and has furthered her knowledge of how to use them by studying traditional Chinese Medicine.

Melissa Tatge, RYT 500, Restorative Yoga

Picture
We get so busy every day, we quickly forget that we are part of the whole, the Divine. Amidst the activity of our daily lives, we disconnect without noticing, and begin to separate from our selves, from each other and from our spiritual right. Through pranayama (breath practice), meditation and restorative yoga, we can begin to reconnect - to uncover the divinity within and reconnect with our true selves.
Melissa Tatge has been practicing yoga since 1995 — studying Iyengar, ashtanga, vinyasa flow and hatha yoga with numerous teachers along the way. Melissa received her 200-hour and 500-hour teaching certifications from Birchwood Center in Nyack, NY. She is currently studying with Liz Schulman at Living Yoga in Cold Spring, NY and Jivamukti Yoga in New York City.

Melissa teaches Restorative Yoga two Fridays per month (starting 01/13). Learn more and pre-register here: www.divyananda.com.
