Common Questions

General
What do I need to bring?
Nothing but yourself, and maybe a towel. We have all the props, mats, blocks, etc. that you might use.

How do I sign-up for a class or appointment?
Go to the Book Online page to schedule a private, partner, group or workshop session/ If a class is full or a time you're interested in is taken, email the studio at info@pilatesonhudson.com and asked to be placed on the waiting list in case of cancellations.

What should I wear?
Something that is comfortable to move in yet tailored so we can see your physique, and something that is not too revealing. For young dancers, please wear leotard and tights and bring your dance shoes, particularly pointe shoes if you use them.

Are you affiliated with any doctors/hospitals?
Many doctors now recognize the benefits of doing pilates, for both flexibility and core strengthening benefits.  A few are aware of the effects of Neurokinetic Therapy as well, although that is a relatively new field.  We have received recommendations from Dr. Jordan Metzl, Dance and Sports Medicine Specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in Westchester County, and by Dr. Louis Bisogni, Chiropractor to the New York Yankees.

Private Lessons & other equipment-based training

I have an Injury - can I still do pilates?
Marilyn specializes in working with clients with injuries.  In addition to pilates and personal training, she utilizes a technique called Neurokinetic Therapy, which helps determine the actual cause of the injury and gives a roadmap to correcting it. After an Initial Evaluation, a specific workout is designed just for you, complete with homework, so to correct the injury at your own pace.  You also do exercises in the studio that build on your home program. If you are bothered by chronic back pain, knee hip or shoulder arthritis, degenerative discs, and a whole host of other stuff, Pilates on Hudson is the right place for you. If you have been told you need surgery and want to see if something different will help, if you want to get off the pain medication, come check out our approach. We don't force you into a group of 20-somethings just to give you a workout; instead, we address each issue individually, gently coach you to get into the right position or find the right muscle groups, and lay a foundation that can gradually be built upon. Sometimes results can be seen in a few lessons, sometimes it might take months but we promise you we will help. For more info, see our Pilates for Post-Orthopedic Rehabilitation page.

What kind of Injuries do you work with?
We have worked with chronic low back pain, knee pain, hip pain, we have experience working with clients with partial and total knee replacements, anterior and posterior approach hip replacements, microdiscectomies, spinal fusions, and the list goes on. Owner and instructor Marilyn Miller has personal experience with doing NKT and Pilates for her numerous dance injuries.   For more info, see our Pilates for Post-Orthopedic Rehabilitation page.

What about Dance Injuries and Dance Medicine?
Owner Marilyn Miller is a former professional ballerina, and first did Pilates at the center for Dance Medicine in San Francisco, CA. Current studies in Dance Medicine indicate that 50% of all dancers develop life-long chronic pain issues, and many of those issues begin during adolescence. Over their lifetime, 100% of dancers will suffer some type of injury. Because of her background and experience, Marilyn can quickly ascertain what a young dancer's weaknesses are, and develop both an in-studio and home practice to help them strengthen and thus lessen their risk of injury.  More info on our Pilates for Dancers page.

Why is Pilates so common in the dance world?
Pilates works so well in the dance world because it takes people who generally are very flexible (hyper-mobile) and pulls them back together to provide greater core strength and stability, which in turn makes it easier for them to do the amazing things they do.

How do I get started?
If you are coming for an injury or other orthopedic issue, you should book an NKT Initial Evaluation and Lesson. This hour and a half lesson consists of a health history review, postural analysis, gait analysis, muscle strength tests , instruction in the basics of pilates (breathing, core, pelvic floor and gluteal engagement), and then you are put through a short tailored workout on the pilates equipment.

What if I don't have an injury but want to work on the equipment?
We encourage everyone to work on the equipment.  Although the studio focus is post-rehab and recovery, we also do general workouts if  that's what you are into.

I booked an NKT Initial Evaluation and Lesson - now what?
Depending on what is revealed with the NKT Eval, you will most likely need at least 3, of not 10 private lessons so we can get an idea as to how to structure your program and get a feel for how you work.  Once we have a handle on your situation, it is up to you how to continue. For best results, we recommend you do this at least twice a week, but understand that schedules are hard to match up.  We can also work to put you in a partner session once we have done the initial evaluation.

How do I start doing group equipment classes?
If you have done pilates equipment classes before, you are welcome to book any class with us. If you haven't, we ask you do at least 3 privates before we place you. That gives us time to see how you work, see what, if any issues you have, and determine what would be the best class for you to go into.

Do you provide a partner for me for Duet training?
We do our best to find a partner for you who is at the same level, dealing with similar issues and can come at the same time.

I take pilates, but my friend doesn't and would like to try... can I bring a friend to my lesson?
Yes, but if your friend has never done it before, it may be a bummer for you as we may spend most of the time teaching them the basics. We don't discourage this, but we don't necessarily encourage it either. They are welcome to come watch you for free.

Do you offer a free consultations? I'm not sure if this is for me...
Absolutely. You are welcome to book a 1/2 hour free consultation with any of our instructors and we'll talk to you about the history of pilates, show you around the studio, and answer any questions you might have.

Is Pilates the same as yoga?
Yes and no. Joseph Pilates pulled from many sources for inspiration when creating his method, and there are definitely elements of yoga throughout the Pilates repertoire. The main difference is that pilates adds in dynamic stretching and resistance training, where as yoga is more about static stretching and body-weight training.

I have absolutely no flexibility - can I still do pilates?
Of course! Pilates will give you more flexibility by strengthening the tight and weak muscles in your body and re-balancing how your body works.

I'm a guy - do men do pilates?
Of course! Although all the info on t.v. would have you believe only leotard-clad supermodels do pilates, the reality is people of all shapes and sizes come and benefit from this style of conditioning exercise. Most notably, many famous sports athletes, such as the Cubs' Jake Arietta.
