The Pilates Method

Joseph Pilates, (1880-1967), born in Germany was a sickly child who developed an avid interest in athletics, physical fitness and yoga. In 1912, he moved to London to train as a boxer. With the outbreak of World War 1, he was interned on the Isle of Man due to his German citizenship. When there, he worked in the infirmary with ill and injured soldiers. He used his knowledge of physical training to develop exercises that helped strengthen and rehabilitate them by utilizing traction beds and bedsprings. After the war, he moved to America where he continued to develop his equipment and opened his studio in Manhattan in 1923.
Dancers and athletes were drawn to his studio for the restorative effect his method had on their bodies. His clients included George Balanchine, members of the New York Cite Ballet and the Martha Graham Dance Company. Pilates continued to develop his exercises until his death in 1967.
The Pilates method of exercise focuses on core abdominal strengthening and shoulder girdle stability while increasing total body awareness. Chronic back, shoulder and neck pain or discomfort may be caused by bad posture or injury. This creates an imbalance in muscle strength, which can affect your alignment. Pilates exercises increase your awareness of this imbalance and work to strengthen your core abdominal muscles.Pilates is an excellent way top strengthen the muscles around a weakened joint area, particularly from arthritis, since the exercise works to strengthen and support the deep stabilizing muscles. Not just for injuries, Pilates is also an invigorating way to exercise for those who want long lean muscles and not bulk.
The hundreds of exercises and mind/body connection of them mean you rarely burn out or get bored from the movements. Embraced by dancers, athletes, trainers, physical therapists, chiropractors and orthopedists, Pilates is a challenging, time proven method of strengthening the body without compromising it or subjecting it to further injury.
A graduated progression means you do more advanced classes when you have developed the strength to do so, which makes the workouts always fun and challenging.
