Historically, Pilates, especially when done on the equipment, was a uniquely private affair. You would get an assessment from the instructor, who would then design and build a program for you, and you could come in at your own time to work on your routine, or you could work with an instructor, but it wasn't a group ordeal.
This changed in the late 1990's when Mari Windsor developed and marketed her Windsor Pilates DVD's, and Pilates mat group classes took off. In recent years, group reformer classes of up to 20 people take place at many studios.
For a variety of reasons, we don't do that here, primarily because there simply isn't the space for it. I offer a more focused and intimate environment. Small group classes are limited to five, reformer classes to three, and mat classes at six.
To begin: If you have any type of injury or issue I strongly encourage you to sign up for the NKT Initial Evaluation and Lesson. This gives both of us insight into what it is that is bothering you and what you can do to alleviate your pain. Often doing group fitness only exacerbates longstanding issues, so it is best to go this route if you are recovering from injury.
If you don't have any major issues and are looking to improve your fitness game, then you should start with a beginning level session. Pilates is something where proficiency develops over time - lots of time. If you have only done a couple of sessions while on vacation, you are not at an intermediate level and need to stick with beginning for now. If you have done sessions for years and can name many of the exercises, you are intermediate to advanced. If you have done Pilates elsewhere and are looking to join a group, see if we have something at your level. If not, you can always do a partner session.
